What is Zumba?

Zumba was created by Beto Pérez who moved to the Miami from Colombia in 1999 to be a Latin dance based fitness class. It has expanded quite a bit from then to include other world dances, but a lot of the music will be new to you unless you listen to reggaeton, cumbia, salsa, merengue, and latino pop on a regular basis.

What should I wear?

For Zumba class,  wear comfortable work out clothes and studio shoes (sneakers that haven't been worn outside) or just your bare feet. If you choose to wear sneakers, choose a pair that doesn't have a ton of grip so you can turn without putting a ton of pressure on your joints.

What should I bring to class?

A full water bottle, towel (if you use one) and of course a smile!

Is this a beginners class?

What I love about Zumba is that every instructor will have a different style and difficulty level. Our classes are  high energy, and the dance moves are a bit more complicated than your typical Zumba class. So I'd say it's definitely accessible for beginners and newcomers, but you'll get both a mental and physical workout.

What's your dance background?

See the "about" page for specific details for each of our instructors, but Ashley, the owner has been trained in most of the Latin dances as well as Bollywood and Bhangra. She fell in love with movement as a hip hop dancer when she was younger but got very involved with the Latin dances when she moved to Colorado in 2009.

Why is the music so loud?

Well... our classes are  high energy, and people who come to our classes love the energy they get when they really FEEL the music through their bodies. I do provide free ear plugs for those of you who still want the high energy moves but aren't feeling the "loud" vibe. Also... if you're sensitive to the noise, try to stand away from the speaker! It's really loud right next to it :-)

How long is a typical class?

Every class is 60 minutes from start to finish. On occasion, we start a little late if there are announcements or weird weather, but that just means we'll go over a few minutes so you get your full work out in!

How do I pay for the class?

A regular drop in at Alchemy of Movement is $20, our membership is $99/mo for unlimited classes. We also have a killer intro deal $30 for 30 days of unlimited classes for new clients!

What's up with the numbers you hold up and the random finger swirling, and am I supposed to do them?

Zumba is about feeling the music which is hard to do if you can't hear it over vocal cueing, so we tend to cue visually with swirls of the finger, fingers pointing in the direction you're about to go, clapping, and giving you hints of the next move a count or two early in the music.
